PDF to PNG Converter

Convert PDF pages to crisp, lossless PNG images in your browser. Adjustable DPI scale. No upload, no watermarks, 100% free and private. Free online.

How to use

  1. Upload PDF — Select the PDF you want to convert into lossless PNG images.
  2. Choose Scale — Pick a render scale. 2x is recommended for sharp output on modern displays.
  3. Convert & Download — Preview pages and download individual PNGs or all pages at once.

The PDF to PNG Converter transforms every page of a PDF into a lossless PNG image, preserving crisp edges, small text, and line art. Built for designers, archivists, and developers who need pixel-perfect document snapshots without compression artifacts.

Lossless vs. Lossy: Why PNG Matters

JPEG applies chroma subsampling and discrete cosine transform compression, which visibly degrades sharp edges and fine text. PNG uses DEFLATE compression, preserving every pixel exactly. For documents, screenshots, and diagrams, PNG is the professional standard.

How It Works

Our tool uses Mozilla's pdf.js to parse the PDF structure, rasterise each page onto an HTML5 Canvas at your chosen scale, and encode the canvas as PNG using the browser's native canvas.toBlob() with the image/png MIME type. The entire workflow stays inside your browser tab — no network requests, no cloud processing.

Scale (DPI Multiplier) Explained

PDF pages are defined in abstract "user units" (typically 72 units per inch). The scale factor multiplies the render resolution:

  • 1x — ~72 DPI, fastest, smallest files.
  • 2x — ~144 DPI, sharp on Retina/HiDPI screens (recommended).
  • 3x — ~216 DPI, print-ready extraction.

When to Choose PNG over JPG

Use PNG when your document contains diagrams, charts, schematics, code screenshots, or any content where edge sharpness matters. Use JPG for photograph-heavy documents where smaller file size is more important than absolute fidelity.

Frequently asked questions

Why PNG instead of JPG?

PNG uses lossless compression, meaning every pixel is preserved exactly. This is critical for documents with fine lines, diagrams, text, or transparency. JPG introduces compression artifacts that can blur small text.

Will file sizes be larger than JPG?

Yes. PNG files are typically 3-10x larger than JPEG for photographic content. However, for documents with lots of white space and text, the difference is smaller and the quality gain is worth it.

Does this tool support transparency?

PDF pages are rendered on an opaque white canvas. If your PDF has transparent elements, they will be composited over white. True alpha-channel PNG extraction from PDF requires advanced vector processing.

Is there a page limit?

There is no hard limit, but browser memory restricts very large documents. We recommend documents under 100 pages or 50 MB for smooth performance.
