What Gets Counted

The tool extracts the text layer of the PDF and applies standard word, sentence, and paragraph detection patterns. The breakdown table at the bottom shows word counts per individual page, so you can identify where the bulk of content lives or which pages are blank.

How It Works

We use pdf.js to read every page's text content, then run pure-JavaScript counting routines (regex-based word, sentence, and paragraph detection). Nothing leaves your browser.

Reading Time Formula

Reading time is calculated as total words / 230 words per minute rounded up. 230 wpm reflects average adult silent reading speed in English. For technical or non-native readers, multiply by 1.3-1.5 for a more conservative estimate.

Frequently asked questions

Does this work with scanned PDFs?

No. Scanned PDFs contain images of text rather than real text. Our tool reads the embedded text layer; if there is none, run the file through OCR software first.

How accurate is the word count?

Word counting is based on whitespace and word-character boundaries. It matches the methodology used by most editors. Tables, footers, and column breaks can introduce small differences compared to Microsoft Word.

What is the reading time based on?

We use 230 words per minute, the average adult silent reading speed in English. For technical content, expect slower pace; for fiction, faster.

Is my document uploaded anywhere?

No. The PDF is parsed in your browser using Mozilla's pdf.js. No part of the file is sent to a server.
