How to use

The PDF Page Numbers tool adds clean, customizable page numbers to every page of a PDF in your browser. No upload, no signup, no software install — just a fresh, numbered file ready to share.

Why Add Page Numbers?

Page numbers are essential for any document longer than a few pages. They make references easier ("see page 12"), help reviewers cite specific sections, and prevent confusion if the file is printed out of order. Common scenarios include:

• Academic submissions — most journals and universities require numbered pages.
• Legal filings — courts mandate page numbers on every filing.
• Long reports — quarterly reports, whitepapers, and proposals all benefit from clear pagination.
• Compiled PDFs — when you merge multiple documents, fresh sequential numbering ties them together.

How It Works

We load your PDF using pdf-lib, embed Helvetica, and draw the chosen label on each page at the position you specify. The original content is untouched — the numbers sit on top in the margin. Save the result as a new PDF.

• Page 1 — verbose, easy to scan.
• Page 1 of 10 — full context, ideal for printed handouts.

Frequently asked questions

Can I start numbering from a specific page?

The 'Start number' field lets you set which number appears on page 1. For example, set it to 5 if your PDF is the continuation of an earlier document. There is no per-page skip option yet — split your PDF first if you need that.

Does this replace existing page numbers?

No. It draws fresh numbers on top of the page content. If the document already has typeset numbers, both will appear. Use the Position setting to place new numbers where existing ones won't conflict.

Will the page numbers cover my content?

Numbers are placed in the margins by default (30pt from the edge). Increase the Margin slider if your document has narrow margins, or pick a corner that has empty space.

Can I use Roman numerals?

Currently only Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3...) are supported. Roman numeral support is on the roadmap.
