When to Tip More

Consider tipping above the standard 15-20% for exceptional service, large groups (some restaurants auto-add gratuity for parties of 6+), complex orders or special requests, holiday dining, and when service staff go above and beyond.

Tip on Pre-Tax or Post-Tax?

Etiquette experts traditionally recommend tipping on the pre-tax subtotal. However, the difference is small (on a $50 bill with 8% tax, tipping 20% pre-tax = $10.00, post-tax = $10.80). Many people tip on the total for simplicity, and this is perfectly acceptable.

Splitting Bills

When splitting a bill, the simplest approach is to divide the total (including tip) equally. For groups with significantly different orders, consider calculating individual shares. Some restaurants can split bills by seat. Venmo and similar apps have made unequal splitting easier.
