How GPA Is Calculated
GPA is computed by multiplying each course's grade points by its credit hours, summing those weighted points, and dividing by the total credit hours. For example, an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course contributes 12.0 grade points. A B+ (3.3) in a 4-credit course contributes 13.2 grade points. The GPA is the sum of weighted points divided by total credits.
Grade Point Scale (4.0)
A+ / A = 4.0
A- = 3.7
B+ = 3.3
B = 3.0
B- = 2.7
C+ = 2.3
C = 2.0
C- = 1.7
D+ = 1.3
D = 1.0
D- = 0.7
F = 0.0
Tips for Improving Your GPA
Prioritize high-credit courses: A grade change in a 4-credit course has more impact than in a 1-credit course.
Retake failed courses: Many schools replace the F with the new grade in cumulative GPA.
Seek help early: Office hours, tutoring, and study groups can prevent a grade drop before it happens.
Balance your schedule: Don't overload on difficult courses in the same semester.
Privacy
All calculations happen in your browser. Your grades and course data are never transmitted or stored on our servers.
The standard 4.0 scale where A/A+ = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7, and F = 0.0.
Can I calculate weighted GPA?
This tool calculates unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale. For weighted GPA (e.g., AP/IB courses), you can manually enter adjusted grade points if your school uses a different scale.
What is the difference between semester and cumulative GPA?
Semester GPA covers one term; cumulative GPA covers your entire academic history. This tool calculates cumulative GPA from the courses you enter.
Does pass/fail affect GPA?
Pass/fail courses typically do not affect GPA. Only include graded courses in this calculator.
Is my data stored?
No. Course data is kept in your browser session only and never sent to any server.
