What Is Hexadecimal?
Hexadecimal (base-16) is a positional number system that uses sixteen distinct symbols: 0-9 for values zero to nine, and A-F for values ten to fifteen. Each hex digit represents exactly four binary digits (bits), making hexadecimal a convenient shorthand for binary data.
This tool converts between hexadecimal, decimal (base-10), binary (base-2), and octal (base-8) in real time as you type.
Why Hexadecimal Matters in Computing
Memory addresses: RAM and disk locations are expressed in hex (e.g., 0x7FFF5694)
Color codes: Web colors use hex notation (#FF5733 = RGB 255, 87, 51)
Byte values: Each byte (8 bits) maps to exactly two hex digits (00 to FF)
MAC addresses: Network hardware IDs are formatted in hex (e.g., 00:1A:2B:3C:4D:5E)
Unicode: Character codes are specified in hex (U+0041 = "A")
Assembly language: Machine code instructions are represented in hex
Conversion Between Number Bases
This tool simultaneously shows four representations of the same value:
Hexadecimal (base-16): Uses 0-9 and A-F. Compact representation of binary data
Decimal (base-10): The familiar everyday number system
Binary (base-2): The native language of computers — only 0s and 1s
Octal (base-8): Uses 0-7, historically used in Unix file permissions
Hex to Decimal Conversion Method
To convert hex to decimal manually, multiply each digit by its positional power of 16 (starting from 0 on the right) and sum the results. For hex "1A3": (1 × 16²) + (10 × 16¹) + (3 × 16⁰) = 256 + 160 + 3 = 419.
Large Number Support
This tool uses JavaScript's BigInt type, supporting numbers of arbitrary size without precision loss. You can convert hex values representing 256-bit hashes, large memory addresses, or cryptographic keys without overflow.
Privacy
All conversions happen in your browser. No data is sent to any server.
Hexadecimal (base-16) uses digits 0-9 and letters A-F. Each hex digit represents 4 bits, making it a compact way to express binary data. It's widely used in computing for memory addresses, colors, and byte values.
How do I convert hex to decimal?
Each hex digit is multiplied by its positional power of 16. For example, hex 2F = (2 × 16¹) + (15 × 16⁰) = 32 + 15 = 47 in decimal.
Does it handle large numbers?
Yes. This tool uses BigInt for arbitrary precision, supporting hex values of any length without overflow errors.
Can I enter hex with a 0x prefix?
Yes. The tool automatically strips the 0x or 0X prefix if present.
