How to use

  1. Upload a video — Drop an .mp4, .webm, or .mov file. Most browsers handle MP4/H.264 best.
  2. Pick clip & quality — Choose start/end seconds, frame rate (FPS), and output width.
  3. Convert & download — Click Convert. Frames are sampled, quantised to 256 colours, and packed into a GIF — all locally.

Free Video to GIF Converter (Browser-Based)

Turn any video clip into an animated GIF — directly in your browser. No upload, no watermark, no signup, no software install. Perfect for social-media reactions, product demos, README files, and chat reactions on Slack or Discord.

How the Conversion Works

Your video file is decoded by the browser's native HTML5 <video> element. The tool seeks to evenly spaced timestamps in the clip you select, draws each frame to a canvas, quantises the pixels to a 256-colour palette, then packs everything into a standard GIF89a file using the 'gifenc' library. Because GIF only supports 256 colours, expect some dithering — the trade-off for universal compatibility.

Tips for a Smaller GIF

  • Lower the FPS — 10 fps is plenty for most reactions; 15+ noticeably bloats the file.
  • Reduce the width — 320–480px works for chat apps and social previews.
  • Shorten the clip — every extra second adds frames linearly.
  • Avoid heavy motion — GIF compresses static backgrounds well but struggles with fast camera pans.

Privacy

Your video never leaves the browser tab. Convert sensitive recordings, prototypes, or unreleased clips with confidence. Pair with the Image Compressor, Image Resizer, or YouTube Thumbnail Downloader.

Frequently asked questions

What video formats are supported?

Anything your browser's <video> tag can play — typically MP4 (H.264), WebM (VP8/VP9), and .mov. If your browser refuses to play the file, this tool can't convert it either.

Why is there a 15-second limit?

GIF files balloon quickly — a 30-second clip at 480px/10fps easily passes 20 MB. The 15-second cap keeps output usable on social media and email. For longer clips, lower the FPS or width.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Decoding uses the browser's built-in video element; quantisation and GIF encoding run via the WebAssembly-friendly 'gifenc' library — everything stays on your device.

Why is my GIF blurry?

GIF is limited to 256 colours per frame. Reduce the source clip's complexity, lower the width, or accept dithering — modern formats like APNG and WebP look better but aren't accepted everywhere.

Can I add captions or stickers?

Not in this tool — it's a pure converter. Add captions in a video editor before uploading, or open the resulting GIF in an image editor afterwards.
