Instagram Carousels & Grid Mosaics, the Easy Way
Two of the highest-engagement formats on Instagram require splitting one image into several: the seamless 3- (or 5- or 10-) tile carousel, and the 3×3 profile-grid mosaic that turns the first nine posts of a profile into one giant picture. This tool does both, in your browser, in seconds.
How the Carousel Split Works
Instagram's tallest portrait format is 1080×1350 (4:5). The splitter crops your source to nine 4:5 tiles when you pick a 9-panel carousel, three when you pick a 3-panel, and so on. Important: post the tiles in order, oldest first, when you build the carousel — the swipe sequence is left to right.
How the 3×3 Profile Grid Works
For a profile-grid mosaic, the splitter takes a centred square crop of your source and cuts it into nine 1080×1080 cells. Upload the tiles in this order to make the mosaic appear correctly on your grid: 3, 2, 1, then 6, 5, 4, then 9, 8, 7 (the first uploaded post becomes the top-left of the most recent grid row).
Tips for a Clean Result
Keep faces, text and logos away from the cut lines. The seams are subtle but visible.
For carousels, design at 3240×1350 (for 3) or 5400×1350 (for 5) so each tile gets an exact 1080×1350 slice.
For grids, design at 3240×3240 — the 3×3 split will produce nine perfect 1080×1080 cells.
Save your master file separately. You may want to retire the mosaic later by replacing the nine posts with one consolidated image.
Privacy
The whole process — cropping, resampling, JPEG encoding — runs locally in your browser. The source image is never uploaded to any server.
Frequently asked questions
What size are the output tiles?
Carousel slices export at 1080×1350 (the Instagram 4:5 portrait max). The 3×3 grid exports nine 1080×1080 squares.
What aspect ratio should my source have?
For the 3-tile carousel use roughly 12:5 (e.g. 2592×1080). For the 9-tile grid mosaic, start with a square image — we'll centre-crop if it isn't square.
Will the seams be visible on Instagram?
Slight gaps appear between carousel cards. Plan your design so important elements don't sit on the cuts. For the 3×3 grid, Instagram's profile shows the tiles seamlessly.
Is the image uploaded?
No. The crop and JPEG encoding happen in your browser.
Why JPG and not PNG?
Instagram re-encodes uploads to JPG anyway. Exporting JPG at 95% quality matches what survives the upload and keeps file sizes small.
