What Is a Favicon and Why Does It Matter?
A favicon is the tiny icon that appears in the browser tab, the bookmark list, the history page, and on the user's home screen when they save a shortcut. It's the smallest piece of brand real-estate on the web — and one of the highest impact. Sites without a favicon look unfinished; sites with a sharp, recognisable favicon look professional and load with stronger brand recall.
The Sizes Modern Browsers Want
There is no single "favicon size" any more. Browser tabs use 16×16 and 32×32. Windows desktop shortcuts pick 48×48. Apple touch icons want 180×180. Android home screens prefer 192×192 and 512×512 from a web manifest. Microsoft tile icons want 96/128/256. Our generator outputs the complete set so every surface gets a pixel-sharp icon, plus a multi-resolution favicon.ico for legacy support.
Design Tips for Tiny Icons
Use one bold mark, not a detailed logo with text — text becomes unreadable at 16×16.
Keep at least 12% padding inside the square — icons get cropped on iOS to a rounded shape.
Use solid colours; gradients lose definition at small sizes.
Strokes should be at least 1px thick at the 16×16 target size.
How to Install on Your Site
Upload every file to the root of your domain (the same folder as index.html). Then paste the HTML snippet we show into the <head> of your site. That's it — clear your browser cache (browsers cache favicons aggressively) and the new icon will appear.
Privacy
Your image is never uploaded. The PNGs and the .ico file are all built in your browser using Canvas and a small custom ICO encoder.
Frequently asked questions
Why so many sizes?
Different devices ask for different favicon sizes: 16/32 for browser tabs, 48 for Windows shortcuts, 180 for Apple touch, 192/512 for Android home-screen. Shipping every size means every device sees a sharp icon.
Is favicon.ico still needed in 2026?
Yes. Many tools, RSS readers, and legacy browsers look for /favicon.ico by default. We generate a modern multi-size ICO that contains PNG payloads — small, sharp and universally supported.
Will my logo look pixelated at 16×16?
Anything renders at 16×16. For best results, design at 32×32 with sturdy strokes and avoid thin details — anything thinner than 1px will disappear at small sizes.
Does this work for non-square logos?
Yes — we centre-crop to square. For perfect results, upload a square source where the visual mark is centred.
Is anything uploaded?
No. All resizing and ICO encoding happens in your browser.
