What Is JPG to PNG Conversion?

JPG (also written as JPEG) and PNG are the two most widely used raster image formats on the web. JPG uses lossy compression — it discards visual data the human eye is unlikely to notice in exchange for very small file sizes. PNG uses lossless compression and supports a transparent alpha channel. Converting JPG to PNG re-encodes the image data without further loss, locking in the current quality and adding the ability to edit transparent regions.

When to Convert JPG to PNG

  • Editing without further loss: Every time you save a JPG, it loses a little more quality. Converting to PNG before editing in Photoshop, GIMP, or Figma freezes the current state.
  • Adding transparency: PNG can store a transparent background; JPG always fills transparent areas with a solid colour (usually white).
  • Screenshots and diagrams: PNG compresses flat colours, sharp edges, and text far better than JPG, with no compression artifacts around letters.
  • Printing logos and icons: Designers usually require PNG for assets where every pixel matters.

Trade-offs to Know

PNG files are typically 4–10× larger than the equivalent JPG. For photographs, this size penalty is rarely worth it. PNG also does not store EXIF metadata the way JPG does, so camera settings, GPS coordinates, and date stamps are stripped during conversion — useful for privacy, but worth knowing if you rely on that metadata.

Privacy

The conversion happens entirely in your browser via the HTML Canvas API. Your image is decoded in memory, redrawn to a canvas, and re-encoded as PNG without ever being uploaded. No server sees the file, no tracking pixels fire, and nothing is stored after you close the tab.

Frequently asked questions

Why convert JPG to PNG?

PNG is lossless, so re-saving the image preserves every pixel. PNG also supports transparency (alpha channel), which JPG does not. Common uses: editing in design software without quality loss, preparing images for logos and icons, embedding screenshots.

Will the file get bigger?

Almost always yes. JPG is heavily compressed; PNG is lossless. A 500 KB JPG photo often becomes 2–4 MB as PNG. If file size matters, keep it as JPG or convert to WebP.

Does converting improve quality?

No. JPG already discarded detail when it was saved. PNG just preserves what's already there — it cannot recover what was lost.

Is the image uploaded?

No. Conversion happens entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. The file never leaves your device.
