What Is Image Rotation and Flipping?

Rotation turns an image around its centre point by a chosen number of degrees. Flipping mirrors the image — horizontally swaps left and right (like a mirror), vertically swaps top and bottom. Together they handle 90% of all "my photo is the wrong way around" problems. This tool performs both operations entirely in your browser using the Canvas API; the original file never leaves your device.

Lossless 90° Rotations

Rotations of exactly 90°, 180°, or 270° are mathematically lossless — every pixel keeps its colour exactly, just at a new position. Arbitrary angles (1°–89°) require pixel interpolation and may very slightly soften the result, which is normal and expected.

Fixing Sideways Phone Photos

Smartphones save the camera orientation inside the JPEG's EXIF metadata. Some apps and websites ignore that tag and show the photo on its side. The fix is simple: rotate by 90° in the right direction and re-export. The new file's pixels are upright, so every app shows it correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Does rotating lose quality?

Rotation by 90°, 180°, or 270° is mathematically lossless — pixels are simply repositioned. Arbitrary angles (e.g. 15°) require interpolation and may slightly soften edges.

What happens to the corners when I rotate by a non-90° angle?

The canvas expands so nothing is cut off, and the empty corner triangles are filled with white (for JPG) or stay transparent (for PNG).

Is the image uploaded?

No. The rotation runs locally using Canvas. Your file never leaves your device.

What's the difference between rotate and flip?

Rotation turns the image around its centre. Flipping mirrors it — horizontal flip swaps left and right; vertical flip swaps top and bottom.

Can I fix a sideways phone photo?

Yes. Many phones save photos with EXIF orientation that some apps ignore. Rotate by 90° clockwise or anticlockwise to fix it, then save.
