The browser's native createImageBitmap decodes the AVIF file in WebAssembly/native code. The decoded pixels are drawn onto an HTML5 canvas, then re-encoded as JPG or PNG using canvas.toBlob. Everything is local — no upload, no third-party service, no logging.

What is AVIF?

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format with ~50% smaller file sizes than JPG at the same quality. It's used widely on the web but isn't yet supported by older Windows apps, Photoshop versions before 2023, and some image viewers.

Does this work in every browser?

Decoding requires AVIF support in your browser. Chrome 85+, Firefox 113+, Safari 16+, and recent Edge work. If your browser can't display .avif, this tool can't convert it either.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Decoding uses your browser's built-in image decoder; encoding uses the standard HTML5 canvas API. Files never leave your device.

Will alpha transparency be preserved?

Only when you choose PNG. JPG doesn't support transparency, so transparent pixels are painted white.

Why is the JPG bigger than the original AVIF?

AVIF compresses much better than JPG. Expect 2-3x larger JPGs than the AVIF source — that's the universal-compatibility tax.
