What Is SHA-512?
SHA-512 (Secure Hash Algorithm 512-bit) is a member of the SHA-2 family of cryptographic hash functions. It processes input data and produces a fixed 512-bit (64-byte) hash value, represented as 128 hexadecimal characters. Like all SHA-2 variants, it was designed by the National Security Agency (NSA) and published by NIST.
SHA-512 is widely used in security applications including digital signatures, certificate generation, blockchain protocols, and secure password storage systems.
SHA-512 vs SHA-256
Both algorithms belong to the SHA-2 family and are considered cryptographically secure. The key differences are:
SHA-512 is used in many security-critical applications:
Password hashing: Many systems use SHA-512 as the basis for password storage (e.g., Linux crypt with SHA-512)
Digital signatures: RSA and ECDSA signatures often use SHA-512 for larger key sizes
File integrity: Verify large downloads and software packages
Blockchain: Some cryptocurrency protocols use SHA-512 for their proof-of-work or signing algorithms
TLS/SSL: Used in certificate signing and connection security
Properties of SHA-512
SHA-512 shares the fundamental properties of all secure hash functions: it is deterministic (same input always gives the same output), produces fixed-length output, exhibits the avalanche effect (small input changes cause large output changes), and is computationally infeasible to reverse or find collisions.
Privacy
This tool uses the Web Crypto API (crypto.subtle.digest) in your browser. No text or hash data is sent to any server.
SHA-512 is a cryptographic hash function from the SHA-2 family that produces a 512-bit (64-byte) hash, displayed as 128 hexadecimal characters. It provides stronger security than SHA-256 with a longer hash output.
When should I use SHA-512 instead of SHA-256?
SHA-512 is often faster than SHA-256 on 64-bit processors because it operates on 64-bit words natively. Choose SHA-512 when you need a longer hash output, when working on 64-bit systems, or when your protocol or specification requires it.
Is SHA-512 quantum-resistant?
SHA-512 offers better resistance to quantum computing attacks than SHA-256 due to its larger hash size. Grover's algorithm would reduce SHA-512's effective security from 512 to 256 bits, which is still considered secure.
Is the output always the same length?
Yes. SHA-512 always produces exactly 128 hexadecimal characters (512 bits), regardless of whether the input is one character or an entire book.
