Image to Base64 (and Back) — Free Converter

This tool converts any image into a Base64-encoded data URL — and decodes Base64 strings back to viewable, downloadable images. It runs entirely in your browser, so your files never touch a server.

What Is Base64-Encoded Image Data?

Base64 represents binary data using 64 printable ASCII characters. When you Base64-encode an image, the result is a long string that can be embedded in HTML, CSS, JSON, or anywhere else text is allowed. The full data URL form (data:image/png;base64,...) tells browsers exactly how to decode and render the image inline — no separate HTTP request needed.

When to Use Inline Base64 Images

  • Email templates: Inline images so they render without external assets.
  • Tiny SVG/PNG icons: Avoid extra HTTP requests for under-1KB graphics.
  • CSS background images: Eliminate render-blocking secondary fetches for critical visuals.
  • Embedded previews: Save image previews in JSON, localStorage, or single-file HTML reports.

When NOT to Inline

Base64 inflates file size by roughly 33% and prevents browser caching. For most production images, serving them as cached files is faster than inlining. Reserve Base64 for tiny critical assets, email templates, or contexts where external requests aren't possible.

How Decoding Works

Paste a full data URL or a raw Base64 string and the tool reconstructs the image, displays a preview, and offers a one-click download with the correct file extension inferred from the MIME type.

Frequently asked questions

What image formats are supported?

PNG, JPG/JPEG, GIF, WebP, SVG, BMP, and ICO. Any format your browser can read works.

Is there a file size limit?

We recommend keeping files under 10 MB. Base64 encoding inflates size by ~33%, so very large images become unwieldy strings.

What is a data URL?

A data URL embeds the file directly into the URL using the format data:[mime];base64,[data]. It can be used inline in HTML, CSS, JSON, or any text context.

Should I inline images as Base64?

Use it for tiny icons or one-off cases. For most images, separate files cached by the browser load faster than inline Base64.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read with FileReader entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
