HEX, RGB, and CMYK Explained
HEX: 6-digit web colour code (#RRGGBB). Used in CSS and HTML.
RGB: 0–255 values for red, green, and blue light. Used by screens and digital design tools.
CMYK: 0–100% values for cyan, magenta, yellow, and key (black) ink. Used by offset and digital printers.
Print vs Screen Colour
RGB has a wider gamut than CMYK, so colours like bright neon green or electric blue cannot be reproduced with standard inks. Always preview your design in CMYK mode in Illustrator or InDesign before sending to print to spot colours that will shift.
Privacy
All conversion math runs locally. No colours are transmitted.
RGB is additive (used by screens — red, green, blue light combine to make white). CMYK is subtractive (used by ink — cyan, magenta, yellow, key/black combine to make black). Printers need CMYK.
Why does printed colour look different from screen?
Screens emit light; paper reflects it. Many vivid RGB colours (especially bright greens and blues) are outside the CMYK gamut and shift duller when printed. Always proof on the actual paper stock.
Is the CMYK math exact?
The tool uses the standard simple conversion formula (the same one Photoshop's 'CMYK' preview defaults to). For professional print, your printer's ICC profile will give slightly different numbers calibrated to their press.
Is anything uploaded?
No. All conversions are pure JavaScript math running in your browser.
