What Is a Readability Score Checker?

A readability score checker analyzes your text using established formulas to estimate how easy or difficult it is to read. This tool calculates four widely-used readability metrics: Flesch Reading Ease, Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, Gunning Fog Index, and Coleman-Liau Index.

Understanding the Scores

Flesch Reading Ease (0-100): Higher scores mean easier reading. 90-100 is understandable by a 5th grader. 60-70 is standard. Below 30 is best understood by university graduates.

Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level: Translates readability into a U.S. grade level. A score of 8.0 means an 8th grader can understand the text.

Gunning Fog Index: Estimates years of formal education needed. Higher = more complex. Newspapers typically score 11-12.

Coleman-Liau Index: Uses character count instead of syllables, making it more reliable for shorter texts.

Why Readability Matters

  • Web content: Users scan web pages. Simpler writing keeps them engaged longer.
  • SEO: Google rewards content that satisfies user intent. Readable content reduces bounce rates.
  • Accessibility: Lower reading levels make content accessible to more people, including non-native speakers.
  • Legal compliance: Many industries require consumer-facing documents at specific reading levels.

Tips to Improve Readability

Shorten sentences. Use common words instead of jargon. Break long paragraphs into smaller ones. Use active voice. Replace multi-syllable words with simpler alternatives when possible. Read your text aloud — if you stumble, your readers will too.

Recommended Levels by Content Type

Blog posts: Grade 6-8. Email marketing: Grade 5-7. Technical docs: Grade 10-12. Academic papers: Grade 12+. Children's content: Grade 3-5. Legal documents: Grade 12+ (though plain language movements push for Grade 8).

Frequently asked questions

What is Flesch Reading Ease?

A score from 0-100 where higher = easier to read. Scores of 60-70 are considered standard for general audiences.

What grade level should I aim for?

For general web content, aim for grade 6-8. Academic papers may be grade 12+. Marketing copy works best at grade 5-7.

How accurate are these scores?

Readability formulas are estimates based on word and sentence length. They don't measure meaning, coherence, or topic difficulty.

What is the Gunning Fog Index?

The Fog index estimates years of education needed to understand text on first reading. A score of 12 means college-level reading.

How many words do I need for accurate results?

At least 100 words gives reliable scores. Shorter texts may produce skewed results.
